Pain doesn't wait. Neither should you — but we get it.
Walking into a new provider’s office for the first time can feel like a bigger step than it should be. If you’ve been putting off that first chiropractic appointment because you’re not sure what happens once you’re walk through the door, this guide is for you.
Here’s exactly what to expect, from the moment you arrive at Virtuous Wellness Center, from the perspective of our primary chiropractor, Dr. Daren “Oz” Osborn.
Before You Arrive
A few small things can make your first visit smoother:
- Wear comfortable clothing. You may be asked to move through a range of motion during your examination, so clothing that’s easy to move in is ideal.
- Bring your health history. A list of current medications, past injuries, surgeries, chronic health conditions, and any recent imaging (X-rays, MRI, CT scans) helps your chiropractor better understand your overall health.
- Bring your insurance information, if applicable, so our front desk team can review your benefits before your appointment.
- Come with your questions. Whether you’re wondering how chiropractic care works or you’re nervous about being adjusted, we’re happy to answer them.
Step 1: The Consultation
Your visit starts with a conversation—not an adjustment.
Dr. Osborn will ask about your current symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, your medical history, lifestyle, daily activities, and any treatments you’ve already tried. He will also ask about your goals, whether that’s getting back to work, exercising comfortably, sleeping better, or simply moving with less pain.
This conversation helps determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition and guides your personalized treatment plan.
Step 2: The Physical Exam
Next comes a thorough physical examination. This may include:
- Posture and movement assessment
- Range-of-motion testing
- Orthopedic and neurological testing
- Muscle strength and reflex testing, when appropriate
- Palpation (using the hands to assess muscles, joints, and areas of tenderness or restriction)
Depending on your symptoms and health history, Dr. Osborn may recommend imaging or refer you for additional testing if it’s needed to better understand your condition or rule out problems that require a different type of care.
Nothing here should feel rushed. This step helps identify the factors contributing to your pain and ensures that any treatment is appropriate and safe.
Step 3: Discussing Your Plan
Once Dr. Osborn has completed the evaluation, he will explain his findings and recommendations in plain language—not medical jargon.
You should leave this conversation understanding:
- What may be contributing to your symptoms
- Whether chiropractic care is likely to help
- What your recommended treatment plan looks like
- Approximately how many visits may be appropriate based on your condition and goals
- What you can do at home to support your recovery, such as exercises, stretches, posture modifications, or activity recommendations
This is also your opportunity to ask questions. You should feel comfortable with your treatment plan before moving forward.
Step 4: Your First Adjustment (If Appropriate)
Many patients receive their first adjustment during the initial visit, but not everyone does. Whether treatment begins that day depends on your examination findings, health history, and whether it’s appropriate to proceed safely.
If an adjustment is recommended, it’s usually a brief procedure. You may hear a popping or cracking sound during the adjustment. This sound is caused by gas being released from the fluid within the joint—similar to cracking your knuckles—and does not mean bones are grinding together.
Most patients find adjustments comfortable. Some experience immediate improvement, while others notice gradual changes over the following days. Mild soreness afterward is also normal and can feel similar to the soreness after trying a new workout.
Step 5: What Happens After
Before you leave, you’ll typically have:
- A clear understanding of your diagnosis or working diagnosis
- A personalized care plan and recommended follow-up schedule, if needed
- Home exercises or self-care recommendations, when appropriate
- An understanding of what you may experience after treatment and when to contact our office with questions
You shouldn’t leave wondering what comes next. Your care should be personalized, collaborative, and focused on helping you reach your goals.
